I work for Amazon Web Services. There has been a lot of discussion lately regarding a scathing article about the culture at Amazon. Here is my experience.

So the New York Times published an article about Amazon and how it treats its employees on Saturday. There’s been a lot of discussion on LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter about the article. There was also a rebuttal that I think brings balance to the discussion. I ask you to please read both of the articles if you are interested but here is the TL;DR version:

The article paints Amazon as an unrelenting, mechanistic, top-heavy organization that chews up top talent and spits them out as fast as it can. The rebuttal refutes these arguments with facts and data (the Amazon way). The author says that he does not recognize the Amazon described in the NYT and would quit if he did. I agree wholeheartedly. I would not work here anymore if I thought this company resembled the NYT’s description even a little bit.

I think that Nick did a fine job taking on the article point by point so I will not do that here. The reason I am posting this article is to relate my own story so that people can have just a little more data about Amazon before making any decisions on where to work or where to buy.

I have a genetic heart defect called HCM(Hyperthropic Cardiomyopathy). I was diagnosed in late 2006 when my doctor heard a murmur in my heartbeat. The disease progressed until, finally, in late 2014 my cardiology team recommended I undergo open-heart surgery to correct the obstruction. The obstruction caused severe fatigue and syncope, an event that ends in me fainting for no apparent reason. HCM is the leading cause of sudden death in student athletes. I had had an ICD implanted in 2012 to forestall that type of event but it became apparent in early 2015 that I could not stall any longer. I needed the surgery and I needed it soon.

The trouble was I had just started working for Amazon Web Services as a development manager in April, 2014. I had not completed my first year and I did not want to step out for six weeks before even completing one year! This was not due to any pressure from the leadership. I’m just funny that way. I like to follow-through on my committments and I felt that I should give them a year before taking a leave of absense. In the end, however, my health had to come first so I talked with my leadership.

If my leadership chain were anything like the NYT suggests I would have had a pretty rough time of it. It turns out that they actually are human beings and were 100% supportive. My manager and I worked out a transition plan where I designated a couple of my team’s top engineers to stand in for me while I was away. The team was very encouraging and I knew that they would perform well and build some awesome stuff while I was recuperating.

One related point on the Leadership Principles. The principles talk alot about “Leaders”. The reason Amazon is so keen on building leaders is that we recognize that leaders lead naturally. By encouraging every single Amazonian to lead we create a culture where everyone is leading something. When it came time for me to step out for six weeks I knew my team would continue to perform admirably because they are all leaders. They happily take the lead when necessary and acede to other’s leadership when it is time to do so.

Finally, I want to thank Amazon and my team for making such a difficult time in my life as worry free as can be expected. It would have been hard to make it through that without knowing I could count on Amazon once I was back on my feet.
